Scroll right and discover all of the city’s sights that you can easily explore on foot. Or via the menu list you will find all my personal favorites from Lucerne and its surroundings. Have fun!

Jesuit Church: This first baroque sacred building in Switzerland was completed in 1677 and is based on the model of the «Il Gésu» church in Rome. The stucco, high altar organ and the church treasure are open to the public.

Carl-Spitteler-Quai: On the lake promenade you can stroll listening to the music from pavilion via the Hotel Palace to the Verkehrshaus. Far-reaching views of the lake, Pilatus and the KKL. Dedicated to the only Swiss winner of the 1919 Nobel Prize for Literature.

City Hall: The Lucerne City Council holds its meetings in the Renaissance building which was built in 1606. The front of the building is reminiscent of a Milanese palazzo with the roof shaped like a Lucerne farmhouse.

KKL: The culture house and congress center at the train station is world-famous for the acoustics of its concert hall housing the music festival weeks in summer. Built in 1998 by the Parisian architect Jean Nouvel.

Hofkirche: Built in 1633 during the Renaissance, the Roman Catholic Church with its 69 meter high towers looks over the city. Rich ornamentation and three large organs tempt you to take a public tour.

Market at the Reuss: On Tuesday and Saturday mornings (7am – 12pm), local groceries and flowers are sold on the Reuss River. It is the most beautiful weekly market in Switzerland, with a variety of restaurants under the arcades.

Steam ships: five paddle steamers like the “Uri” built in 1901 and 14 motor ships offer trips to picturesque villages such as Weggis and Gersau on Lake Lucerne. With a grandiose view of the surrounding mountains.

Spreuerbrücke: A painted dance of death is an attraction on 45 of the original 67 wooden panels that adorn the roof of the Spreuer Bridge. The bridge, built in 1408, is the third of the covered river crossings in Lucerne.

Needle weir: The needle weir is still used in Lucerne, regulating the levels of Lake Lucerne. The water from the Reuss River is fed into a modern turbine power station above the Spreuer Bridge.

Weinmarkt: The square with richly decorated houses was used in the 13th century for the grocery trade, open-air gatherings and a court square with a pillory.

Museggmauer: The 870 meter long defensive wall from the Middle Ages has nine towers overlooking the city of Lucerne. The Männli Tower, Schirmer Tower, Watch Tower and Time Tower are open to the public in summer.

Löwendenkmal: The Lion Monument is one of the most famous monuments in the world. It commemorates 760 Swiss mercenaries who were killed in the Tuileries battle in Paris in 1792. The stone lion sleeps on the edge of a pond. Access is free.

Kapellbrücke: Built in 1365 over the Reuss river, it is the second longest covered wooden bridge in Europe with an octagonal water tower situated in the middle. It was once the city archive, a treasury, dungeon and torture room.
